Kerala trip planner — backwaters, hill stations, and the timings that matter
Kerala looks like the easy trip and is the one most often planned wrong, because almost everything in it runs to a timetable: houseboats, ferries, tea estates and the evening shows. This page lists what we checked ourselves, with dates, and says what we did not.

What we checked
Alleppey houseboats check in around noon and check out at 9am the next morning, but every boat must anchor by 5.30pm, so an overnight booking buys about five and a half hours of actual cruising.

Houseboats may not cruise between 5.30pm and 8am, so the lake is left clear for fishermen's nets.

At the Kerala Kathakali Centre in Fort Kochi the make-up starts at 5pm and you can watch it; the performance runs 6pm to 7pm. A ticket for the full two hours is ₹600.

What we could not check
Monsoon-season access
Several of these change or close in heavy rain and we have not been in every season. We will say when we were there rather than implying it holds year-round.
